Santa Severina

Santa Severina is one of the more evocative sites of Calabria and without doubt one of the most important in the province of Crotone (the distance between the two is about 26 chilometres).

It stands on a rocky cliff at 326 metres on the sea level, in the hearth of the Neto’s valley. For its particolar location it is known as the “ship of stone”.

Santa Severina was likely founded by the Oenotrians, an Italic people living in the area before the Greek colonisation. The old name of the village was Siberene.

The great Mediterranean and European civilizations affected the history of Santa Severina leaving archaeological traces, ruins, monuments and treasures that are now a human heritage for us all.

Nowadays it is difficult to find a place where you can see such a great concentration of artistic, monumental and cultural treasures: the old town can stir up emotions that leave your spirit in total harmony with time and space.

Santa Severina, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, is also famous for its studies thanks to its ancient classical Liceum and the Libera Accademia for foreign students.

Today the village has also become the ideal stage for important artistic events in relation with the theatre, music and art of our region.
