Capo Rizzuto: a protected corner in the sea

The marine protected area of Capo Rizzuto is the largest in Europe with an extension of 13.500 hectares and over 36 chilometres of coast: it is one of the most important sites in Italy environmentally speaking.

Seabeds alternate wide stretches of sand with rocks covered with posidonia and madrepore. Numerous aquatic species find shelter in the cavities of the cliffs: octopus, lobsters and date mussels. As depth increases, it gets very common to meet groupers, mourays and the multicoloured Carribean parrotfish.

A unique natural landscape which is an authentic under water archaeologic museum with ruins of ancient villas, wrecks, amphoras and columns, heritage of a long and evocative history.

In some parts of the reserve, you can go sport fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving with qualified guides provided by the diving and fishing centre of the Costa Tiziana Hotel & Village for their customers.

Every week the Costa Tiziana Resort organises activities in the protected area  thanks to the support of education advisors and sea biologists. For children up to 14 years there are always pleasant learning activities on the private beach of the hotel or by the reserve’s aquarium under the guide of a sea biologist. A way to learn having fun to make children more familiar with the sea world and all its wonders and to protect such a precious resource.

All the information points within the resort provide informative material about the marvellous environment of this sea-gem along the Ionian coast.

If you take part in the games we organise you can win a present reminding you of the reserve: the Casteland tale to colour, the interactive dvd,  a grouper, seahorse or barracuda poster.
