Archaeology and Culture
The territory of Crotone was an inportant area of ancient Magna Grecia. But there is something more. The history of this land is closely intertwined with that of the Mediterranean sea: you can still breathe these ancient vibes in the alleys, in the palaces’ architecture and in the city’s monuments.

- Visiting Crotone
An itinerary through the 16th century Castle of Charles V, the National Museum and the Archaeologic Park of Capocolonna with the tourist guides of Costa Tiziana.
At the National Museum you can also see the treasure of Hera including numerous objects and finds of the Greek period discovered in the ancient sanctuary of Hera Lacinia at Capo Colonna.
- Le Castella
The village of Le Castella, the “pearl of the Mediterranean sea”, is an archaeological complex between the sky and sea. A magnificent Aragonese castle on a small island connected to the the coast by a thin strip of land.
- Santa Severina
One of the most beautiful ancient villages in Italy: a dive into the Byzantine period. One of the best preserved old town centres in Calabria, monumental hearth of the province of Crotone.
- Cirò Marina – Torre Melissa
A visit to the Archaeological Museum of Cirò Marina, the ancient Krimisa, where finds from the temple of Apollo Aleo are preserved. The tour goes on visiting the Mercati Saraceni, where in ancient times Turkish traders docked and goods were exchanged.
There is then a stop at Torre Melissa to visit the mighty Torre Merlata, one of the most beautiful examples of sighting towers that today houses the local peasant culture museum.

Visit to the castles of Crotone, Isola of Capo Rizzuto, Santa Severina and the complex of Caccuri.
- Signs of time
The palaeontologic tour of Vrica and Stuni winds along the hills of Crotone. It is one of the most important geological sites in the world with its typical badlands of clay and sandstone around the small valleys of tamarisks, at Vrica, and of asphodels, in Stuni. Two areas that yield visible evidence of some million years of glacial and interglacial events in Europe.
Food and wine tours

The vineyards by the sea at Cirò
The ancient grape harvest in the world. This tour, that must take place from 10 september to 20 october, gives you the opportunity to familiarise with the local wine tradition walking through the secular vineyards of the Cirò territory, heirs of the vines producing the Krimisa, an ancient Greek wine, noble forefather of modern Italic wines. A unique chance to discover the genuine spirit of the province of Crotone and experience such an intense festal atmosphere during the period of the grape harvest.
The schedule includes:
- Visit to the vineyards of local farms. An opportunity to witness the time of the grape harvest appreciating the patient work of skilled hands season after season. Intense moments and autumn scents to enjoy the pleasure of tasting a fresh bunch of Gaglioppo grapes.
- In the cellars of local producers. Visitors will discover how a bottle of wine is produced. After visiting the rows of vines with the vine-dressers, they can go into the cellar to follow the different stages of the production cycle: from wine-pressing up to the must up through all the inportant stages of a grape harvest.
- In the farms producing local delicatessen. Visitors will be welcomed as friends: they will taste delicious local products along with a good glass of wine. An old rite in modern times with the friendly producers.
Nature itineraries between land and sea
The best way to discover the beauties of this land is diving into its uncontaminated nature. Costa Tiziana staff planned some itineraries to make this experience even more stimulating.
- A day in the Sila, the green lung of Italy. Visit to the Ampollino Park, a precious natural environment where one can take relaxing strolls through the wide and pure mountain landscapes of the Sila.

The colossal trees of Fallistro
The Giants of Fallistro. It is a small, but extraordinary wood in the natural reserve that includes black pines and mountain maples: real plant giants measuring up to 40 metres of height and 2 metres of diameter. They are what remains of the primitive coniferous forests covering the plateau.
- A day in the marine protected area of Capo Rizzuto. An opportunity to watch closely the wonders of the sea. Excursions take place on board of boats allowing to look through the sea, its flora and fauna, its beds and their archaeological finds such as amphoras, potsherds, tools, Greek and Roman wreckage.
- The Aquarium of Capo Rizzuto isle. Many of the sea species of this sea live here inside 22 tanks. An exhibition of different specimens that have been recoverd thanks to the cooperation of fishermen and sea lovers.
- Sailing and Boat excursions. In this region a boat tour means to feel emotions while moving and discover the precious historical evidence that are scattered all along the coast.
- Fishing. Going fishing can be a different approach to the sea. Along with very experienced skippers and local fishermen you can live personally the different stages of this very ancient sea activity, on board of powerboats or trolling boats, depending on the season. Each period of the year has indeed a specific fishing technique.
